There are many reasons why inexpensive, easy-to-use website design sites don't work. Using a Wix template, I'll show you five major reasons why these templates don't help businesses get more customers, and how you can make some changes to make things work for you.
Why do people go the DIY way?
Part of it is budget, part of it is the DIY mindset, and part of it is advertising by website builders convincing people that it's easy-peesy-breezy. There's nothing wrong with any of that. But.
There are definitely things that professional designers know that many small business owners don't. Things that are helpful, enlightening and even interesting. Design isn't about making something beautiful. Design is about making something - in this case a website - that is attractive and usable. What I mean by that is, a website has certain functions it needs to perform. Collecting leads, converting visitors into customers and representing you well. Those are just a few roles it must perform.
Knowing what your goals are, what you want your site to do for your business, and where to put sections and calls to action, are critical. While a lot of site builders have gorgeous templates and themes to choose from, many business owners get thoroughly confused when they start using one and don't know where to place their content or how to write the copy that will really connect with their intended audience.
So, how and why to DIY sites fail? Take a look.
After watching this, are you still interested in going the DIY way? Or are you now pausing to consider talking to a few designers about your website project? I strongly suggest talking to a few designers and get their opinion on what you're trying to accomplish. It's possible they will each say something different, and some of it you may not like at all. But keep an open mind. They may see something in you that you didn't realize or hadn't thought about, something that could well be a key to your future success. And if you still come to the conclusion that you want to do it on your own, perhaps you can take the suggestions and advice of these designers and use it. And use it well.
